Capitol Hill's Newest Resident

From Michael Reese, MPD
On May 20, 2009 at approximately 0824 hours, Captain Jeff Brown and Lieutenant Daniel Ewell were standing outside of the First District Substation, 500 E Street, SE when a male driver frantically exited his vehicle at the intersection of 5th & E, St. SE. The male driver summoned help for his wife which was having a baby in the front passenger’s seat of the vehicle. Captain Brown and Lieutenant Ewell observed that infant’s head was visible. The officials rendered assistance by immediately calling for an ambulance, calming and assuring the mother and father that additional assistance was responding. The front seat of vehicle was lowered to support imminent full delivery. The baby was delivered in the front seat of the vehicle before paramedics arrived. The father was able to grasp hold of the baby as she was being delivered. Officials on the scene provided blankets and clothing to keep the baby warm. The new baby girl “Elizabeth” and mother were both conscious and breathing on the scene. Both parents would like to thank MPD for their quick response.
